EDT explained: the 12 lessons and how to use them

Essential Driver Training is 12 mandatory one-hour lessons with an approved instructor (ADI), logged in your official record. Spacing them out with practice between is what makes them work.

What EDT actually is

Twelve structured lessons covering the core competencies — car control, road position, observation, junctions, and the situations that fail tests. Each is recorded by your ADI in your EDT record; the full set must be complete before your driving test.

How to get value from it

Do not binge all twelve in a fortnight. The syllabus assumes practice between lessons with your accompanying driver — lesson, practise it, next lesson. Learners who pair each EDT session with hours of sponsored practice consistently arrive at the test readier than those who treated EDT as the whole diet.

Choosing the instructor

Any legal instructor is an RSA-approved ADI — verify the badge. Beyond that, choose for patience, clear feedback, and knowledge of your test centre’s routes. A recommendation from a recent passer in your town is worth more than any advert.

Serve drivers like this reader?

From driving instructors to garages, Escargo routes local demand to local businesses — open lanes onboard now, everything else registers interest and is called first.

On Escargo, local providers get found by nearby drivers, take bookings against their real availability, receive job details up front, keep the customer updated with live status, and get paid — with every job on one record. Escargo lists only real, verified businesses; pages like this one never show invented providers, prices or ratings.

Frequently asked questions

Are all 12 EDT lessons mandatory?

Yes for first-time category B learners — the record must be complete before the test. Some prior-licence cases differ; rsa.ie has the current rules.

How much does EDT cost?

Instructors set their own rates per lesson; many sell blocks. Ring two or three local ADIs — and weigh patience and route knowledge alongside price.

Can I practise outside lessons?

You should — with your qualified accompanying driver, on suitable roads. The learners who practise between lessons are the ones EDT was designed for.
