For years the Fiesta was the default Irish small car, and the used pool is huge — the best ones are a joy, and they are cheap to keep. Buy on condition and history: the spread between a minded Fiesta and a neglected one is the widest in the class.
What you are buying
A supermini that drives with more polish than the price suggests, in a used market so deep you can afford to be fussy. Engines range from simple small petrols to the EcoBoost turbo triples; all are known quantities to Irish garages and parts are as cheap as parts get.
Checking a used one
Fiestas live two lives: minded family second car, or thrashed first car. The service book tells you which you are looking at. On EcoBoost versions apply the same cooling-system diligence as the Focus — coolant level, evidence of proper work, a test drive to full temperature. On any Fiesta, check clutch bite on hill starts (town cars eat clutches), listen for suspension knocks over ramps, and inspect the front tyres’ inner edges. The rare older automated-manual gearboxes are best avoided in favour of the standard manual.
NCT and running it
NCT failures are the small-car standards — bulbs, tyres, brake wear — and all are cheap to pre-empt with a local garage check. Running costs are among the lowest in the country: commodity parts, short service times, and insurers who have quoted a thousand Fiestas before yours.
