The UK zones
London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone charges non-compliant vehicles daily across a wide area, alongside the separate Congestion Charge in the centre — and other British cities run Clean Air Zones with their own terms. The continental stickers

German cities require the Umweltplakette green sticker for their Umweltzonen, purchasable from approved bodies. Other countries and cities operate their own schemes with the same shape: your car has a class, the zone has a rule, and the sticker or registration must exist before the city boundary, not after the fine.
What this means for your car
Before any city trip, establish your car’s emissions standing — it is on the registration paperwork and checkable via the official zone tools — and be honest about older diesels, which are the class the zones exist to exclude: some city centres are simply closed to them or charge daily. Factor zones into route planning (skirting a zone is often trivial), and if you are choosing a car partly for continental trips, its zone compliance is now a real criterion alongside tax and fuel.
