Night driving for new drivers

Night driving is a separate skill: sight lines shrink to your beams, judging speed and distance gets harder, and fatigue arrives quietly. Learn it deliberately — first runs on familiar roads, lights genuinely clean and aimed, speed set by what you can see.

Seeing and being seen

Your world narrows to what the beams show, so the equipment matters more than by day: bulbs all working, lenses clean (film on the inside of ageing headlights steals real distance), and washer fluid topped up because winter roads film the windscreen exactly when lights are in your eyes. Use full beams on empty unlit roads and dip early for oncoming traffic and when following — being dazzling is as dangerous as being dazzled.

The judgement changes

Speed and distance cues fade in the dark — a single oncoming light could be a motorbike near or a car far. Drive to your sight line: you must be able to stop within what you can actually see, which on unlit rural roads is shorter than the daytime limit invites. When oncoming lights dazzle, look to the left verge line and slow rather than staring into the glare; if an overtaking car’s lights fill your mirror, glance away and let the mirror dim.

Fatigue is the real hazard

Tiredness at night is not a discipline problem, it is physiology — and new drivers concentrating hard burn out faster. Plan late journeys with company where possible, break every hour or so on longer runs, and treat yawning, drifting line position or missed signs as a stop-now instruction, not a push-through challenge. No arrival time is worth microsleeping at speed.

Serve drivers like this reader?

From driving instructors to garages, Escargo routes local demand to local businesses — open lanes onboard now, everything else registers interest and is called first.

On Escargo, local providers get found by nearby drivers, take bookings against their real availability, receive job details up front, keep the customer updated with live status, and get paid — with every job on one record. Escargo lists only real, verified businesses; pages like this one never show invented providers, prices or ratings.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use full beams?

On unlit roads with no traffic in sight ahead or oncoming — and dip the moment lights appear, including when you catch up behind someone. If a car ahead has its rear lights visible, your full beams are in their mirrors.

How do I handle being dazzled?

Slow down, look towards the left edge line rather than the lights, and widen your following gap. If you are seriously dazzled, ease off until vision returns — never guess your way through the glare.

Are my headlights good enough?

If night driving feels like peering, test the basics: bulbs bright and matched, lenses polished, aim checked at a garage (easily knocked out of alignment). Aim and cleanliness fix most “bad lights” complaints cheaply.
